Child Centered Play Therapy

A Place for Healing and Growth Through Play

Child-Centered Play Therapy (CCPT) is a research-supported, play-based approach designed for children ages 3 to 10 who may be experiencing emotional, behavioral, social, or relational challenges, including those related to trauma, anxiety, aggression, and difficulties in relationships. Because play is a child’s natural language, CCPT allows children to express feelings, explore experiences, and make sense of their world in a way that feels safe and familiar.

At the heart of CCPT is a trusting relationship between the child and therapist. Healing happens not through instruction, but through connection, acceptance, and the freedom to explore. As children engage in play, they are given the space and support to process emotions, build confidence, and develop more effective ways of coping.

The process is guided by eight foundational principles developed by psychologist Virginia Axline. These principles shape a respectful, child-led environment:

  1. Warmth and trust – The therapist builds a friendly, supportive relationship with the child.
  2. Unconditional acceptance – Every feeling and behavior is met with empathy and respect.
  3. Freedom to express – Children are encouraged to express themselves openly in a safe, permissive space.
  4. Understanding emotions – Therapists reflect the child’s feelings, helping them develop emotional insight.
  5. Belief in the child’s abilities – Therapists trust each child’s natural capacity to work through difficulties.
  6. Child-led sessions – The child sets the pace and direction of play, promoting autonomy.
  7. Patience with the process – Change is not rushed; growth unfolds at the child’s pace.
  8. Healthy boundaries – Clear limits are set when needed to ensure safety and security.

Through this approach, many children experience decreased emotional and behavioral difficulties, improved relationships, and greater self-esteem. If you’re looking for a compassionate, developmentally appropriate way to support your child, CCPT offers a powerful path toward healing and growth.
